This statement resonates, although AO3 does happen to suit my tastes better than others as an archive, and I've supported it for that reason and because I feel that OTW is doing good work. However, without a discussion forum attached to it, AO3 always feels to me like an archive, not a community. Lack of comments reinforces that impression. I figure it's my own fault for not getting more involved and helping foster a community (How?!), so I can't grumble about it too much, but there it is.
We get our community elsewhere (DW, LJ) instead. I do very much appreciate when fans in my own fandom (Final Fantasy) working on AO3 serve as a bridge, posting where we'll see it to let us know what's up. I'm really not sure how to bridge that gap save through hardworking individuals doing just that. I would say, "AO3 Discussion forum," except that requires full-time moderators and more servers, which probably isn't a good allocation of resources.
